The last Questing of Arjun
(English Translation of my Odiya Poetry)

Lying on a bed, Vasudeva, with a blood-stained body,
Having completed his earthly pastimes (leela), awaits departure to heaven.
At Partha’s arrival, a smile bloomed on his divine face.
He said:
“Come on in, O Kiriti, Let us spend on this earth for two more moments.”
Seeing Shri Krishna in unbearable agony,
Arjuna’s heart cried out:
“Where do dharma, justice, and truth abide on this earth?
This is that Madhava,
Who dedicated every moment of life
To the world’s welfare,
Destroying adharma, establishing dharma
With heavenly divine wisdom.
Through knowledge, logic, and the might of power,
He strove to build a vast earthly heaven.
Yet now, the helpless Lord
Witnesses the rise of adharma.”
Placing his hand on Krishna’s sacred feet, inquiring of his well-being,
Arjuna spoke:
“O Keshava,
I fought at your command,
Believing dharma would be established,
Adharma destroyed.
The world’s people need no heaven—
I trusted your words:
‘I am the soul, O Gudakesha, dwelling in all beings’ heart’ (Bhagavad Gita 10.20).
Residing in every heart,
You’d seek heaven’s bliss, compassion, and love.
You gave knowledge on the battlefield, dispelling my doubts.
I grew resolute, vowing to fulfill my duty—
My Kshatriya dharma to fight
And establish righteousness.
Your words made me wise,
And with those words, men and women will grow wise through the ages.
But, Lord, permit this ignorant question—
My final query:
With a gentle smile, the all-knowing Shridhara spoke:
‘I came to establish dharma,
I strove, fought, and caused wars.
Adharmic ones were destroyed, the worthy became kings.
But the complete establishment of dharma…?
Tell me, Partha, news of Hastinapura.
Express your doubts,
Let the treasury of knowledge grow
For future men and women.’
‘In Hastinapura, people enjoy your grace,
Your blessings.
But, Lord, I hesitate to say—
Hastinapura mirrors Dwarka in many ways.
Cowardly men and women, slaves to sloth,
Slowly abandon faith in the soul.
Seeing my kin and subjects,
Questions arise in my mind:
What need was there for Kurukshetra’s war?
I lost grandsire Bhishma, revered guru Drona,
Dear son Abhimanyu, and brother Karna.
Jambudvipa lost countless brave soldiers.
Today, Lord, you bear the consequences.
Wicked soldiers’ sons, barely educated,
Seek pleasure in wine and women.
Widowed soldiers’ wives, shedding tears, turn to other men.
If this is dharma, Lord, for which we fought
Kurukshetra’s war,
I fear contemplating
Future wars and their outcomes.
The war destroyed the adharmic,
But adharma persists.
Slowly, men and women grow corrupt.
Post-war, dharma-fearing people embraced adharma,
Amassing wealth, proving knowledge futile.
In the frenzy of wealth without wisdom,
They indulged in sensual desires.
Years after Kurukshetra,
The question lingers:
Was the war truly necessary?
Go, Krishna, to heaven, leaving this earth.
This society, this humanity will worship your divine words.’
Hearing Partha’s questions,
From Krishna’s faint voice came nectar-like words:
‘O Arjuna,
Kurukshetra was not the final war.
Wars will rage on this earth through the ages.
I will reside in Nilachala - Sri Khatra Puri, silent,
Never again inspiring war.
I will be a witness,
Each year conducting the peaceful Rath Yatra—
That is My penance for Kurukshetra’s war.’
